Hansel and Gretel Dream Pantomime (Hänsel & Gretel Traumpantomime)
In 1890, when his sister asked for a set of four songs based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale for her kids to perform, Humperdinck started work on Hänsel and Gretel. Humperdinck developed the work from that collection of songs into a singspiel, and then a whole opera. Humperdinck developed the work into a singspiel and finally a whole opera from that collection of songs. Instead of sending the kids off to die as she did in the Grimms’ original tale, Hänsel and Gretel’s mother just instructs them to go outside and gather strawberries to keep them from making trouble in the home in Humperdinck and Wette’s rendition of the tale.
